“NO” Doesn’t have to be the End!

The property where I was told had a Civil War Skirmish in my previous post is off limits.  I drove up to the land owners home after work on Wednesday, dressed very nice in my business casual work clothes, I had copies of some of the magazine articles I have written along with a nice business card and was still told no.

When I knocked on the door  the owners wife answered, I asked to speak to Mr. “owners name” and she asked what I needed.  I could tell as soon as she asked that she wasn’t going to let me talk to the owner and that she didn’t even want to give me the time of day.  I presented myself very well and gave her my magazine articles and business card and asked her to read the articles to find out what I do and if they changed their minds to call me.  I hope her husband reads the stories and gets interested and gives me a call but I am not holding my breath.

Now this could be very discouraging but I have a couple of things I can do to possibly change their minds.  The little old lady mentioned in my previous post who told me about this location is friends with the owners.  I plan on visiting with her again this weekend to do some more detecting on her property and maybe mention to her that her friends weren’t too friendly when I asked permission.  With any luck maybe she can convince them.

I have also mapped out all the properties around  the suspected skirmish site and have a list of all the owners and where they live.  If I can’t get on the main skirmish site then I will attempt to get permission on all the surrounding properties, who knows exactly where the bullets were flying that day.

While looking for the owners of the surrounding property I found  an old railroad station, store, and post office down the road from the skirmish site.  Luck would have it that the property (farm fields now) is owned by a farmer who I have already talked to and have a detecting relationship with who stated I could detect any of his property I wanted to.

This weekend I plan on doing a lot of detecting in this area and hopefully will have Civil War Relics and Old Coins to show for my day.

The image below shows the property lines.  The Red line is where the skirmish took place, the Black box is where the dead were buried.  The Blue boxes show properties I already have permission on.
